HISTORY OF THE ASSOCIATION

Le Pavé Dans la Mare has existed for 15 years, more than 60 exposures, some hundred produced works, many residences of artists, many international artists and exposed buildings, an annual public of more than 3000 visitors on average, active members, a club of patrons and a team of employees, engaged in making the public aware of contemporary art.Created in 1994, the purpose of the association Sauf' Art, Le Pavé Dans La Mare, law of 1901, recognized as of general interest, has for goal to promote and diffuse contemporary art in an area where this is usually proposed little. The structure has a policy of support for artists, but also one of expansion. The local activity of the structure remains essential since the association became a reference for the territorial collectivities and the State. Le Pavé Dans la Mare now wishes to develop important projects, with a strong visibility and to continue to make art accessible to all public. Association thus carries simultaneously exposures, artistic educational work by proposing a teaching service in charge of placing public tools of comprehension at the disposal of various artistic events. Le Pavé welcomes a much diversified school population from nursery school to college, groups of students, social centres, neighbourhood houses, reception centres of children or adults and the individual public.

THE ARTWORK PRODUCTION

One of the main objectives is to support the process of creation, consequently the production of contemporary artworks. This involvement in the production concerns in a first time young local artists, then all of the artists, including internationals. The system of artists's residences in companies is set up. In 2009-2010, 5 artists perform in Mantion (metallurgy, Besançon) and Vitabri (air sector material, Besançon). Le Pavé Dans La Mare develops a new kind of patronage for the production of works, in which one, a company will put all his knowledge and staff to the artistic project. Thus, Le Pavé takes care of the strong connections with the company of serigraphy MignotGraphie and regulary works the economical support from the patronage related to specifics projects.

THE PEDAGOGY AND THE PUBLICS

The pedagogy department is one of the most important. He is in perpetual development with the person in charge to create the mediation between the public, the artists and the works.

- Cutural and social: step by step, Le Pavé expends his pedagogical activity in the social sector with more and more attention to specific publics. In another word, Le Pavé anchors its cultural and social action in town and on the territory. He makes interventions with artists in difficult neighborhoods and implements activities in relation local organisations.

- The pedagogical workshops: they take place at each new exhibition with a person qualifified in mediation. The wednesday afternoon, while the education time, the work of the artists is exhibited and studied through different artistic methods used. Consequently, the child is the first actor and creator in a collective atmosphere. Fifty to seventy children are welcomed each year.

[...] THE PEDAGOGY AND THE PUBLICS

- The pedagogical projects in school: from 5 years, Le Pavé leads with the "Conseil Général du Doubs" the project called "Art et Espace au Collège". Each year, two artists makes interventions in colleges, nine this year and nearly 300 students directly concerned. The artists install their work in the building and run many artistic sessions to etablish a strong relation between the students and the work.

- For the handicap public: Le Pavé search to implement himself like social engaged art center. To receive disabled public is generally expensive because of the cost of an adapted material need. The project "Braille Art Workshops" works in this sense with the "Paralysés de France" on our exhibitions at many times.

THE MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ASSOCIATION

1- The exhibitions:

- Currently in process, the exhibition MADE IN PAVÉ will takes place from the 25th of septempber to the 13th december 2010. She'll present the works done by the artists in the companies of the region, demonstrating the wish of Le Pavé to have a real position as artwork productor.

- TRAFFIC-ART HIGHWAY issued from a residence across France and China and presented at the "Hangar aux Manœuvres" of the Citadelle of Besançon from september to december 2009. She received nearly 3000 visitors and many scolar groups. The exhibition goes to Shanghai in 2010, in the context of the Universal Exhibition.

- AFFINITÉS, in "Salines Royales d’Arc-et-Senans" has been organized in 2005 to celebrate the 10 years of the association. She counted 60 works of international artists.

- Moreover, in 2008, the exhibition of Julien Berthier, Welcome Home and another with Alberto Sorbelli, Vingt Vers.

2- The pedagogical projects:

Some recent achievements:
- Art et Espace au Collège, Editions 1 to 5.
- TRAFFIC-ÉCOLES : in 2009-2010, some young artists make interventions in schools related with the exhibiton TRAFFIC ART HIGHWAY.
- Art et Insertion : a project led in 2007 with two associations of social involvement "Les Invités au festin" and "La Blanchisserie du Refuge".
- Tisser du Lien : this residence of artists in the neighborhood of Planoise was the reason of the meeting between people, associations and artists.
- Art et Numérique : this project has permitted to 120 students to familiarize with digital tools.

3- Partnerships with others cultural events:

Le Pavé Dans La Mare gives a lot of importancy to the territory and his identity, that's for why he likes to enter in relation with local events beyond its domain of competences, the contemporary art. For example, Le Pavé has exhibited in the context of the Festival "Jazz et Musique Improvisée" in Besançon or in Paris with "Force De L'art 02".

4- Residences of artists:

Le Pavé received in 2009 3 chinese artists in residence with the support the "Ecole des Beaux Arts" of Besançon, This year, 5 artists has been in residence in two companies in the region (Mantion and Vitabri) on the context of the future exhibition MADE IN PAVÉ.

The residences of artists also take place in difficult neighborhoods of the town: each year, an artists make a project in Planoise. In 2009-2010, the artist Rodophe Huguet achieved a project on the theme of parables with the people of a building destroyed in the context of the PRU. A peplum has been shot and should be displayed on the front of the building.

5- The editions:

Le Pavé develops in paralel of his own events a activity of edition of catalogues and booklets of artists related to the exhbitions and the pedagogical projects. For exemple, the the project "Art et Espace au Collège" publishs a book with a DVD for each edition.

LE PAVE DANS LA MARE ENTERS IN THE CLUB OF
THE FRENCH ASSOCIATION FOR THE ART CENTERS DEVELOPMENT

One more step in the history of Le Pavé: Strong of its 13 years of experience in the field of contemporary art, Le Pavé integrates in the start of 2010 the "association française de développement des centres d’art (d.c.a)". The president of d.c.a Noëlle Tissier, director of the Regional Art Center of Contemporary Art Languedoc-Roussillon, has given her positive opinion to the candidature od the art center Le Pavé Dans La Mare in november 2009, following to a solid study on the association.

Since its creation in 1992, the association d.c.a participates to create networks and federate art centers in France with their statements and programmations. Rising today 50 structures, the members of d.c.a present a huge diversity following to their own story, geographical & social context, size. They're considerated as high places of art production and diffusion of contemporary art. They maintain special relationships with the alive artistic creation. Conceived as places of research and creation, their activites cover through a yearly program of exhibitions, editions and a work of mediation closed to the largest publics.

AWARENESS OF CONTEMPORARY ART

In order to put at the disposal of the public tools for comprehension of contemporary art, Le Pavé dans La Mare works on artistic education by developing a teaching service. Le Pavé Dans La Mare receives, in parallel of its exposures, a much diversified public: school groups ranging from nursery school to college, groups of students, social centres, and neighbourhood centres, after school care centres or adults and individual public.

VISITS OF EXHIBITIONS

The visit of the exhibitions is one of the main point. A mediator receives people individually or by groups. He is in charge to adapt his vocabulary and to organize the interaction following the age of the public.

The public can also complete the visit making an artistic and educational workshop related to the current exhibition. For each one, two dates are suggested for children between 6 and 14 years old, in purpose to understand the work of the artist and to experiment his own tecnics.

THE ACTIVITIES OF PATRONAGE IN LE PAVE DANS LA MARE

Since a few years, Le Pavé Dans La Mare measures the economical and social need but also the companies involved in the contemporary artistic direction. The technical advances and also the wish of leaders of companies to involve themsleves in the actual cultural patronage permit to many artists supported by our art center to develop their creations. The energy of these meetings is focused around the knowledge offered by the company and the artist. This exchange is absoltely essential and productive for both of them.

If many of the cultural actors depend of the public subventions, Le Pavé made the choice of the auto financial support. Today the association finances on her own capital 50% of its action. Thus she understand all the role that plays the patronage and the imortancy to allow the company a close mutual link. Le Pavé Dans La Mare want to build solid partnerships with the world of companies, around the artwork production related the activity of the partner.

BEING A PATRON? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

The State has not any more the monopoly of the culture. By a logical dialogue between the company and the cultural actors, the patronage is a heartbeat. Is's based on trust, exchange and a real mutual enrichment between two world, generally, that don't know each other. In a context of perpetual economical mutations, the patronage represents a considerable asset for the company that find out a new valorization tool for its own internal and external image.

Being a patron, it's:

To have a creative image for the company.
To associate the company to the rising market of the contemporary art.
To associate his name to prestigious events and to a cultural, dynamic organisation socially involved

The different kinds of patronage

Patronage focused on production: producing a work made by an artist.
Financial patronage: an economical help.
Patronage focused on competences : a knowledge contribution.

An interesting mechanism of tax deduction since 2003.

A discount of 60% on the total amount on "the companies tax" for the economical help to Le Pavé, in the limit of 0,5% of the C.A. of the company. The possibility of the use of the "surplus", in case of exceeding the threshold, for the payment of the tax following to these four exercises. The discount of the tax is now done on the amount of taxes and not on the tax base.

Mécéner ou parrainer

Le parrainage n’est qu’une simple action de • communication visant à assurer la publicité de l’entreprise, alors que le mécénat instaure un partenariat privilégié et personnalisé sur le long terme. Les dépenses de parrainage sont assujetties à la TVA. L’économie d’impôt est plus modeste que dans le cadre du mécénat, la déduction s’effectuant sur le résultat imposable, net avant impôt, au titre des frais généraux.

La notion de mécénat est élargie par la loi de 2003 et il n’est plus possible de concevoir une relation unilatérale, un acte gratuit sans contreparties. Ainsi, le Pavé peut désormais associer le nom de l’entreprise versante aux opérations réalisées.

The amount of the associated counterparties is now limited to 25% of the donation. The counterparties possible with the Le Pavé Dans La Mare can take different kinds:

Mention of the partner: name and logo of the company on all of the supports of communication for the exhibitions (invitation cards, catalogues, posters, programs, etc.) ; mentio of the company support in the press relationship ; also the possibility for the company to mentionate the support of Le Pavé in its internal and external communication. Prestigious public relationship operations and a real value added in a high cultural place.
